“The bathroom was flooded and the day had yet to begin”

When absolutely everything (but really everything) seems to be going wrong, it’s nice to know that you’re really not the only parent where crying is closer to you than laughing.

Petra (40) is married to Mick (39) and mother of Lisa (7) and Lena (5).

β€œIt was such a day. A day when Murphy’s law really seems to hit everywhere, and I had my period too. Mick would go golfing for the day, the girls and I would make muffins and watch movies. Just nothing for a while; rest and relax. The kids decided otherwise.

It was already a fight when they woke up. I hadn’t finished my first cup of coffee after I’d already intervened three times. Check it out, I thought, I’ll put them in front of a movie, and then it’ll be over soon. But no matter what I tried, the TV wouldn’t work.

Plan B

I switched to plan B and immediately decided to make muffins when the washing machine beeped. Crazy, I had just turned it on. Halfway up the stairs, I already heard the problem: half the bathroom was flooded. I threw a pile of used towels on it, decided to check with the girls before I mopped up again, when the screams already came towards me.

The kitchen was a mess. The complete carton of milk turned out to be poured into the mixing bowl, and the batter was dripping down the kitchen cupboards. And the day had yet to begin. The children looked at me guiltily. Crying was closer to me than laughing.

Wrong lot

Lesson number one for every mother: step out of the situation, if it gets too much for you. So I put on a jogging suit, ordered the girls to do the same, and decided to take the dog for a walk first.

The moment I closed the door behind me, I realized something was wrong. I’d left both the keys and my phone inside, and Mick would be hours away from home. Crying, I rang the neighbor’s doorbell. Who had no key, but fortunately could call Mick.

While the kids watched the promised movie with her and I finally got around to that first cup of coffee, Mick drove up with a look full of pity. “From now on you play golf when the kids are asleep,” I pouted. After which I was allowed to take a bath for the rest of the day against the stomach ache.”
