Tesla’s Lane Change Assist may not be legal in Europe
The number of autonomous functions continues to rise sharply in many vehicle models. A few years ago we could only have the speed regulated automatically using cruise control and distance assistants, but high-priced models now offer significantly more functions. On the other hand, there are some technologies that are already ready for the market but have not yet been approved by the legislator.
Tesla is now feeling this. Although the circumstances of the current investigations have not been published and only very vague words are spoken, the Federal Motor Transport Authority is nevertheless investigating whether the lane change assistant is permitted in the vehicles.
The feature, which is now part of the “Full Self-Driving” package, does nothing other than position itself in the flow of traffic and automatically carry out overtaking maneuvers depending on the traffic situation and speed. To ensure that the driver retains control of his vehicle at all times, overtaking maneuvers are announced in good time and can be cancelled.
The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is now saying that it wants to coordinate with Tesla and the RDW registration authority. This is based in the Netherlands and is responsible for approving Tesla vehicles in Europe. However, it is not known why the KBA finds the function questionable.
Nevertheless, a decision in this country could affect the entire approval process in Europe. But whether that will be the case remains to be seen. Until then, Tesla can only hope that any allegations will be dropped and that owners can continue to change lanes comfortably.
