Telegram broke signup record during WhatsApp / Facebook outage

The misfortune of some makes the happiness of others. Telegram reveals that it hosted more than 70 million users during Facebook’s long global outage, which also affected WhatsApp. Pavel Durov, the founder of messaging, revealed it in a message.

70 million new users on Telegram

“Telegram’s daily growth rate exceeded the norm by an order of magnitude, and we welcomed over 70 million refugees from other platforms in a single day.”, said the founder, making a connection with the breakdown of WhatsApp and Facebook. “I am proud of how our team has handled this unprecedented growth, as Telegram has continued to function smoothly for the vast majority of our users. That said, some users in the Americas may have experienced slower speeds than usual as millions of users in that region rushed to sign up at the same time ”, he added.

In view of the large number of new people, Pavel Durov invites those who have been there for a while to do what is necessary to take the new users by the hand and present them the various functionalities available. “Make sure they stick around and see why Telegram is light years ahead of the competition”, he writes. He concludes by greeting the new arrivals and indicating to them: “We won’t let you down when others do”.

Telegram had 500 million users at the start of the year. There is no information on the count at this time. The application has also passed the milestone of one billion downloads. This took place in August.

A success also at Signal

For its part, Signal messaging revealed that it hosted “Millions of new users”, without further details. In any case, this is not the first time that this has happened. The app had already drawn a crowd a few months ago, when WhatsApp announced its controversial update to its rules.
