Sygic brings traffic sign recognition to navigation

Camera traffic sign recognition is often only integrated in more expensive or premium cars. Slovak company Sygic has now integrated this feature into your navigation, so you can use it on any car with the help of your smartphone.

The new Sygic navigation feature is useful for temporary restrictions

Sygic Navigation has been offering the Speed Alerts feature for a long time, which shows the driver the current maximum allowed speed in the lower right corner of the screen. The information on the maximum permitted speed is read from the data of the map, which is regularly updated in the application. However, there may be some unexpected restrictions on the roads that are marked with a mobile sign.

It is in this situation that the traffic sign recognition function is useful. It can visually recognize speed-limited traffic signs, dynamic traffic LEDs and displays the current maximum permitted speed. It works by having your smartphone’s camera capture the road in front of the vehicle and detect traffic signs with speed limits. Recognition also takes place in the background when using navigation mode.

The changes are displayed at the maximum allowed speed icon in the lower right corner of the screen. When the application loads a new speed limit from the road sign, the icon changes, accompanied by a simple animation. However, you need to keep in mind that the quality of brand recognition depends on several factors, such as lighting conditions, the cleanliness of the windshield or the location of the smartphone.

How to activate the function?

  1. Go to the quick menu in the application and tap Brand recognition.
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions to attach the smartphone to the windshield and align it with the help line on the screen. Small deviations are fine, but it is ideal to mount the phone as flat as possible so that the recognition works properly.
  3. In the application, set the traffic sign recognition function to activate automatically each time you drive.
