What is a head up display?
A head-up display (HUD) projects the information onto a transparent screen, usually at the user’s eye level, so that the information appears to float in the real environment. This allows the user to easily see the information without looking down or distracted from the road or other tasks. It is most commonly used in vehicles, such as cars and motorcycles, as well as aircraft and other applications.
In vehicles, a head-up display often shows information such as speed, navigation instructions, fuel level, warnings and other relevant data. This enables the driver to perceive important information at a glance, without having to take their attention away from the road.

The German Digades has developed a head-up display under its Tilsberk brand that projects real-time information onto the motorcyclist’s visor at a virtual distance of 10 metres. Think of speed limits, actual speed, upcoming turns and the time and distance traveled. You connect the device to the phone via Bluetooth and then the screen can last up to 12 hours on one battery charge. You can also import GPX routes or load routes via the calimoto app. The navigation itself is done via TomTom maps and Sygic has made its Mobile SDK available.
Creating this HUD presented several challenges. An important point was making sure the device was small enough to fit on a motorcycle helmet. It also had to be strong enough to withstand all kinds of weather conditions and vibrations. Another important factor was energy efficiency, so that the device’s battery lasts all day on a long drive. The designers have also deliberately reduced the amount of information to minimize distractions. They have focused only on the most important information.
The Tilsberk head-up display can be controlled via a special app, which allows motorcyclists to customize the display, start a route and access other functions. The device costs 399 euros.
