‘Strawberries, sponges or a honeycomb? I’m sick of it’
Skin pores, soap bubbles, sponges and the inside of a bell pepper: someone with trypophobia should not think about it.
Anika (31), mother of a daughter of 1:
“When I think of scraping the seeds out of a tomato, it sends shivers down my spine. Strawberries, a brittle bar and skin pores also make me anxious. Officially my phobia is called trypophobia; the aversion to dirty and asymmetrical holes. And also for clusters of holes, such as those of soap bubbles, sponges or a honeycomb from which bees hatch.

Trypophobia
In primary school I had to make Christmas pieces from dried lotus flowers. I absolutely didn’t want to, because it made me uncomfortable and nauseous. Of course I didn’t know there was a name for that. People never understood me either, teased me about it. It was only when I googled ‘fear of cavities’ that I discovered that it is a real phobia.
“Afterwards I stand out of sight and scream loudly”
I also have a lot of trouble with the inside of a bell pepper or melon. Because I don’t want to burden my daughter Maud with this, I keep confronting myself with things that are difficult for me. Afterwards I stand out of sight and scream loudly.”
