Steam starts in e-cars – but there is a big catch
Don’t worry about boredom among Tesla drivers: As promised, the car manufacturer is bringing the Steam gaming platform into electric cars, making lots of games available. The latest software update also brings additional apps such as Apple Music. But for gamers, there’s a big catch.
Christmas present for gamers: Tesla brings Steam into the electric car
With the Christmas update from Tesla, Steam is making its way into the entertainment system of e-cars worldwide. According to Tesla, thousands of games are available that gambled directly in the e-car can become. Elon Musk himself points out the most important titles at the start – still in a beta version:
As seen in the included Tesla video, seems Cyberpunk 2077 to run smoothly – not just a treat for console gamers. According to the Tesla boss, you can also play with a mouse and keyboard in the e-cars – but it could get uncomfortable. Huge choice, then, and Tesla gaming could even bridge the eternal divide between console and PC.
If there wasn’t a big catch: Steam does not run on all Tesla EVs. The platform or the games distributed over it have high requirements and therefore only come on the latest versions of Model S and Model X. Tesla has them here RDNA 2 GPUs by AMD installed (source: Engadget) on which the on-board electronics run. These chips are also used in the PlayStation 5, for example, and are therefore equipped to take on modern games. The mid-range cars from Tesla, Model 3 and Model Y, therefore have to do without Steam.
According to Musk, older models will also get Steam in the future. The Tesla boss leaves open whether it is about older versions of Model S and Model X or whether Model 3 and Model Y can also be enjoyed. By the way, the gaming function is deactivated while driving.

Subscribers to have better luck AppleMusic: The app manages with the update on all Teslas. If you have an account, you can also use the offer directly in Tesla in the future. This falls an old boundary between Apple and the carmaker. For years, the iPhone maker has had no interest in opening up its music service to Tesla. It’s not the only opening coming soon at Apple.
In addition, the update should come with Zoom on the Tesla. In Dog Mode, dog owners can monitor their four-legged friend in the car via app and interior camera, and a number of other features via smartphone are also new.
