Spotify Has a Lockscreen Widget (And It’s Pretty Useful)
Spotify has recently introduced a widget that you can put on the lock screen. We tell you why that is secretly quite handy.
Read on after the ad.
With the latest update of the popular music service, the app has a new function. It is now possible to put a Spotify widget on the lock screen of your iPhone in iOS 16.
The widget can’t do that much yet, but it’s still useful to have it on your lockscreen. You can launch the Spotify app directly from the lock screen with the widget. So you no longer have to swipe up, browse your apps and start Spotify. No, just unlocking your iPhone and tapping the Spotify widget on the lock screen is enough. Handy, right?
… and that’s how you put it on the lockscreen
Since iOS 16, Apple allows you to put widgets on your lock screen. You can store up to four (depending on size). This is how you put the Spotify widget on your lock screen.
This is how you put Spotify as a widget on the current lock screen of your iPhone
- Unlock your lockscreen and press it briefly with your finger;
- Tap ‘Edit’ at the bottom;
- Select ‘Access screen’ on the left;
- Tap on the widget bar (if your widget bar is already full, you must first remove one by tapping the minus sign);
- Choose the Spotify widget, under ‘Add widgets’;
- Close the window and tap “Done” to save your lockscreen.
Good to know: sometimes it takes a while before the widget appears in the list of apps. It usually helps to open Spotify once or restart your iPhone.
It’s a pity that the Spotify widget doesn’t show a song title or playlist. During playback you can of course see in the Spotify player on your lock screen which song you are listening to, but there is nothing else on the widget.
The YouTube music widget does always show which playlist you’re currently listening to, so it’s possible. But it can also be worse: you cannot place Apple Music as a widget on your lock screen.
