sharing your account will end in 2023

It has been in the air for some time that Netflix would do something about account sharing, now the streaming platform has taken the next step. Sources report that the free sharing of your account on Netflix will be over at the beginning of 2023.

End of free Netflix sharing

Sharing a Netflix account is done by many users of the streaming platform. Of course, Netflix knows that too. Not much was done about that by the company, but that will really change from 2023, reports The Wall Street Journal. Sharing an account ensures that others do not have to take out a separate subscription and thus save costs, but strict action will be taken against this method of sharing. The UK government has issued a warning today that sharing your Netflix or Disney+ account is illegal, meaning Britons guilty of doing so could face legal action.

Netflix will crack down on those who share their accounts with others, according to WSJ. This does not apply to those who are part of the account owner’s household. Netflix looks at various factors to determine this. For example, think of IP addresses, device IDs and account activity. Still, it remains to be seen how Netflix exactly works. The fact that a different device or the like is used once does not mean that it does not belong to one household. Earlier the message was already circulating about working with verification codes.

How much the surcharge is for those using a shared account is not yet known. It is suspected that this will amount to an amount of 3.00 euros per month. Netflix is already conducting tests that limit account sharing. This is not yet the case in the Netherlands and Belgium. Netflix will also try to attract new members in a different way. The company is working on a new subscription form that is cheaper than the current offer, but does show advertising.
