SFR puts an end to its community Wi-Fi system
It’s the end for SFR WiFi, with the operator in the red square announcing that it is ending its community Wi-Fi system. He was the first in France to launch such a system. Free did the same. Free also stopped its own service in 2021.
“Since May 1, 2023, the SFR WiFi and WiFi FON services have been permanently discontinued”, noted operator’s website. He doesn’t say anything else about it.
The idea of the SFR WiFi service was that all the operator’s customers could connect free of charge to the boxes of other customers to have Internet access. Obviously, it was a limited access, the subscriber did not have access to the full speed and to the information of the owner of the box. But it had the advantage of helping out depending on the situation, especially a few years ago when Internet quotas for mobile plans were less generous than today.
Those who connected with a computer or tablet must therefore find an alternative solution. The most obvious is the fact of creating a connection sharing with your smartphone.
SFR WiFi only concerned France. For its part, WiFi FON offered the possibility of connecting free of charge to Wi-Fi hotspots in more than 70 countries. Both have therefore been abandoned since May 1.
