Save heating costs with winter mode: does this window trick really work?
Over the so-called winter mode of windows, these lie closer to the seal. In this way, heating costs can be saved because the contact pressure is increased – at least some people claim in TikTok videos. An expert quickly explains what this supposed trick is really about.
Winter mode on windows: myth or truth?
Videos can be seen on TikTok and other networks in which people from a alleged winter mode for windows to report. This should definitely be “activated” so that the heating costs don’t go through the roof – or in this case through the window.
The winter mode is supposed to be a simple trick to increase the contact pressure on windows. The desired result: The Windows are even closer and prevent expensively generated heat from escaping. A simple solution that is done quickly and also saves money? It’s not quite that simple after all.
One thing is certain: With the plastic windows that are almost always installed in Germany, the manufacturers have to guarantee, even without an alleged winter mode, that they close airtight at any time of the year. If they do not offer this, they must not be installed in the first place, as stipulated by the guidelines of the Energy Saving Ordinance. During installation, craftsmen usually check carefully whether the windows actually close airtight.

Window specialist: Never heard of winter mode
Ulrich Opitz, as a master craftsman and expert for building damage, claims to have “never” heard of a winter mode for windows (Source: Mimikama). Even his colleagues would be puzzled if customers reported about this.
Opitz thinks it’s a bad idea to go through the settings on windows yourself as a layman. That could more harm than good bring. A higher contact pressure even accelerates wear, which can then lead to leaky windows.
