Samsung’s next folding cell phone: This rumor brings back bad memories
With its folding cell phones, Samsung has hit the mark and created real blockbusters. Thanks to a lower price, the successors to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 could be even more successful. A new supplier is supposed to make this possible. A look into the past shows how surprising the move could be.
It was the biggest setback in Samsung’s successful smartphone history: the Galaxy Note 7. The pen smartphone literally burst into flames in 2017. Faulty batteries are said to be to blame. Ultimately, the South Koreans had to take the model completely off the market. Despite the inglorious end of the Note 7, the battery supplier at the time could play a major role in Samsung’s upcoming folding smartphones.
Is the battery supplier of the Galaxy Note 7 used?
According to South Korean media reports, Samsung is considering for the next generation of its foldable smartphones Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) batteries. (Source: The Elec). So far, Samsung has been using batteries from its own subsidiary SDI for its promising folding cell phones.
ATL supplied the electronics group with the batteries for the Galaxy Note 7 in 2017. Samsung is said to have blamed them for the fire disaster and ended the collaboration for a short time, according to The Elec.
Although the two companies are now working together again, ATL is said to have provided the batteries for the A and M series of Galaxy cell phones. However, it is surprising that Samsung could rely on ATL for folding smartphones of all things, the construction of which is more complicated and therefore more prone to failure. Apparently, after the Note 7 debacle, the industry leader has full confidence in the battery supplier again.
