Samsung replaces Google’s Focus mode for alternative

A smartphone can of course be very distracting. With dozens of incoming notifications, apps from friends or messages that it will rain again, we keep reaching for our phone. If you want to focus on something other than your smartphone, Android has fortunately built-in Focus mode. However, this function is missing in One UI 5 on Samsung smartphones, although the South Korean manufacturer fortunately has an alternative for this.

Focus mode

Focus Mode lets you pause distracting apps and turn off notifications from specific apps. You can also set a schedule from when to when apps should not show you notifications. You can select which apps no longer show notifications. This way you can ensure that you do receive notifications from the apps that are important or necessary for you, but the rest is switched off. Alternative from Samsung

Samsung has chosen to omit Focus mode from its smartphones. All smartphones that run on One UI 5.0 no longer have the function. Instead, the manufacturer has developed its own focus mode called ‘Focus mode’. We briefly discuss what you can do with this mode and what the differences are with Google’s Focus mode.

Where can I find Focus mode and how does it work?

Focus mode can be found in the settings of your Samsung smartphone. You can find it under the heading ‘Stands and routines’. Below we walk you through step by step how you can open Focus mode and what you can do with it.

  1. Open the settings on your Samsung smartphone
  2. Tap Standings and Routines
  3. Choose here for which situation you want to set the Focus mode. You can choose from sleep, driving, training, relaxation or work. You can also add a stand and/or situation yourself.
  4. You can also have every situation set automatically. For example, you can link a location or time to the ‘work’ situation. If you are then at this location, or if the time has come, the Focus mode will be switched on automatically.
  5. For each situation, you can indicate which apps are not allowed to show notifications and which are allowed to do so.

Focus mode or Focus mode?

Basically, Google’s Focus mode and Samsung’s Focus mode work the same. Both apps are made to temporarily disable distracting apps and notifications on your smartphone. This so that you can focus on other things. Google’s Focus mode is the simplest, Samsung’s Focus mode is more extensive. It simply offers several useful functions, such as setting up different profiles and linking a location to them.
