Samsung announces that it is working with Google on an extended reality (XR) headset that runs on Android. The device must be for sale to consumers and Samsung also has Microsoft and Meta develop services specifically for the device.
Samsung extended reality headset
On Wednesday, the Galaxy S23 series stole the show at Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked, as expected. Little to no major surprises were revealed at the time, but Samsung is working behind the scenes on another product that piques our interest.
Samsung explains to The Washing Post that it is working on an extended reality (XR) headset. XR is a collective name and it can therefore be a device that works with virtual reality, augmented reality or mixed reality. The chips of the headset are supplied by Qualcomm, while Google tinkers with the software. The Samsung XR headset must work on a modified version of Android.
More than just gaming
Samsung is still puzzling when it comes to the expected launch date of the device. We are only told that development is “progressing”. According to other rumors, Apple is going to release an AR or VR headset this year, so it seems likely that Samsung’s device will appear at least not much later.

We can also assume that this product has been worked on for a long time, because the first rumors date back to 2019. Samsung already hinted at the arrival of the headset last year. We do not yet know what to expect from the XR headset. The first thing we think of is applications for AR or VR gaming, but everything indicates that the product will also have other applications. Samsung already reveals that Meta and Microsoft, among others, will release services for the XR headset.
