Samsung is always coming up with new ideas to make smartphones more interesting. So far, this was more the case for folding cell phones, which cause a stir but are still not as popular as classic cell phones. Samsung could now significantly upgrade the latter with an innovative idea.

Samsung is developing smartphones with a transparent display back

Normal smartphones have a display on the front that can be used to operate the device. This is also the case with Samsung. However, the South Korean company is considering a new idea – the back of a normal smartphone should become more useful. Xiaomi has already tried that with the Mi 11 Ultra with a small display. But Samsung would like to go a different way and on the Place a transparent display on the back. Content would only be displayed if you really needed it:

For example, if you don’t want to use the front camera for a selfie, but the main camera on the back, you would a small thumbnail will appear next to the main camera and you could trigger the camera at the bottom or switch to a different sensor. If you put your phone on the display, notifications could be displayed on the back. If nothing is happening, you wouldn’t even notice that there is a display on the back. The possibilities are manifold.

Samsung recently introduced new folding phones:

Idea from Samsung is not entirely new

Manufacturers like ZTE or Xiaomi already had similar ideas with displays on the back of smartphones. The Huawei Mate Xs 2 (test) also folds outwards so that it can also be operated from the back if you want to use the main camera to take photos. An added value is already recognizable. If the transparent display from Samsung supports even more functions and doesn’t consume too much energy unnecessarily, that would be a good unique selling point. Purely from the design of the drawing, the smartphone would probably be a Galaxy S23 Ultra or Galaxy S24 Ultra. However, we do not know whether the patent will ever be implemented.
