Samsung and IBM want to bring weekly mobile life
IBM and Samsung are collaborating to develop new chip technology. The new vertical architecture could lead to a weekly smartphone life. This would mean a return to the endurance that push-button phones had from more than a decade ago. The report was brought by The Verge portal.
IBM and Samsung are designing a new generation of chips
The new design talks about stacking transistors vertically on top of each other, instead of the flat contemporary design. Therefore, the technology should also be called Vertical Transport Field Effect Transistors (VTFETs), while the current one is called FinFETs (Fin Field Effect Transistors). has today.
While we are still years away from the available VTFET chips, the manufacturers IBM and Samsung have a very optimistic view of this technology. According to them, the new technology will increase performance up to twice and reduce energy consumption by up to 85%, compared to the FinFET design. As a result, Moore’s Law will continue to apply, stating that the number of transistors will continue to increase in the future.
We should also look forward to mobile phones that we charge once a week, instead of almost every day. However, it would also have other effects: cryptocurrency mining would be less expensive, as would data encryption, and we would see more powerful IoT devices.
Intel demonstrated its own technology in the summer – RibbonFET. We should see this as early as 2024 in common processors for desktops and laptops.
