Research has shown: the biggest reason to switch to the electric bicycle when the price of fossil fuel rises

Shimano Inc, from Japan, is the metal processing company specialized in the production of fishing and skiing equipment and bicycle parts. In 2005, 75% of the total production consisted of the production of bicycle parts. In Europe, the head office is in Eindhoven.

The Japanese company conducted a study among 15,500 people from 12 different countries. The research looked at the main reasons for purchasing an electric bicycle. The results of this research are shared with you in this blog.

Purchasing an e-bike and price of fuel

The rising prices of petrol, for example, are given as the main reason for purchasing an electric bicycle in 9 of the 12 countries. At least 53 percent of those surveyed with a Dutch nationality agree with this.

Subsidies come in a close second place. The research has shown that when the government provides a subsidy to support the purchase of an e-bike, 50 percent are more willing to buy an electric bicycle.

Electric bicycle subsidy in the Netherlands

There are currently three tax schemes in our country – also known as subsidies – that are only valid for entrepreneurs. These schemes support employers to purchase an electric bicycle for themselves or for their employees. These grants consist of:

• Environmental investment deduction (MIA)
• Accelerated depreciation of environmental investments (VAMIL)
• Small-scale investment allowance (KIA)

There is currently no separate subsidy scheme in the Netherlands for private individuals. In France, for example, subsidies are given for electric bicycles. Five years ago, France had a low market share in electric bicycles. Thanks to the stimulation, the market share has grown. People over 55 adhere to the advice for maintenance

When you purchase an electric bicycle, it is advisable to have your e-bike checked by a bicycle specialist once every 6 months. Research by Shimano Inc shows that it is mainly the over-55s who adhere to this: more than 41 percent. In addition, 66 percent agree with the influence of maintenance on extending the lifespan.
