Record number of subscribers for Netflix in the US: new policy implementation works
Since the streaming service Netflix in the US decided to ban password sharing, there has been a significant increase in subscribers. The number of cancellations has also increased since the introduction, but this is considerably less.
Netflix is a wildly popular streaming service with many subscribers from all over the world. With a subscription you don’t have to be bored anymore, there is always a movie or series to watch. Such a streaming service makes it easy to binge series and watch all kinds of movies in good quality. Moreover, many people often use an account. This has recently changed, with positive consequences for Netflix so far.
Netflix subscriptions, what about it again?
If you have a subscription with the well-known streaming service, you can stream unlimited. Your favorite series, movies and documentaries; you will find a wide range on Netflix. You can opt for a subscription that you pay for monthly. You can choose from the Basic (7.99 euros), Standard (11.99 euros) or Premium (15.99 euros) subscriptions. Previously, it was possible to share your Netflix account with multiple people, with just one account.
Due to the arrival of several popular streaming services, such as HBO and Disney +, Netflix has to compete more and more. It is more difficult to keep growing and so the company has come up with a solution. Thanks to the introduction of the new policy, it is no longer possible to use one account with several people.
New Netflix policy in America
In the US, password sharing has been completely banned since May 23 this year. This has not been a bad decision by the company so far. Having started with an average increase of about 73,000 subscribers, the streaming service has peaked at 100,000 new subscribers a day since the new account sharing policy. This number is the fastest increase since 2019, according to research by analytics company Antenna.
Despite criticism from users who indicated that they wanted to cancel their account, it appears that fewer people have actually done so. It is not yet possible to say anything about the long-term effect of the new policy. Antenna’s figures are a snapshot of several days, and only apply to the United States.
What about the policy in the Netherlands?
Banning the password sharing, it’s a new policy that Netflix has been working on for several months. You may have already noticed this, because in the Netherlands and Belgium you have to pay to share an account these days. If you want to add someone to your account outside of a household, you pay an extra monthly fee of 3.99 euros. The various subscriptions are slightly more expensive in Belgium than in the Netherlands. Whether the new policy from the US will also be implemented in other countries is still unclear. Although the chance is of course there.
Although the ban will of course impact many users, it is understandable given the rising competition from Netflix. We secretly hope that the new regulations will not be introduced for a while.
