Driving aptitude register: how many points are you allowed to have?
In order to keep your driver’s license, you must stay below 8 points. Until then, however, there are two further gradations. First comes a warning, i.e. a call to change your driving style. In addition, one is advised of voluntary participation in a seminar on active points reduction. From a warning that you get with 6 points, you can no longer claim this.
From 8 points, driving is over: your driver’s license will be revoked and with it the right to get behind the wheel. Then you get the rag at the earliest after 6 months again. To do this, however, you must have shown by passing the MPU that you are suitable for driving a vehicle.
Points | measure |
4-5 | admonition |
6-7 | warning |
from 8 | confiscation |
We have broken down how many points you get for speeding and other offenses in the following guides:
Reduce points & let them expire – how does that work?
As long as you haven’t been warned, you can actively earn points – but this is only possible to a limited extent. If you don’t have five points yet, you can do one Driving aptitude seminar take part. After that you get a point waived. However, there is a catch: With such a seminar, you can only reduce one point every 5 years.
However, that doesn’t mean you’ll stay stuck on the points forever. Instead, the points expire over the years. The duration depends on the severity of the offence on. Is it a misdemeanor or a criminal offence? Did you collect a point or two? Depending on the time, it takes between 2.5 and 10 years for your traffic offense to be removed from the register.
A small consolation: After all, since 2014 rigid repayment periods, which means that the waiting time is not extended for another point. Each individual entry stands on its own and is automatically deleted when the deadline expires. We have listed the exact repayment periods here (source: ADAC):
offense | repayment period |
Administrative offense with 1 point | 2.5 years |
Administrative offense with 2 points | 5 years |
Offense with 2 points | 5 years |
Offense with 3 points | ten years |
