Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
Qualcomm has something to say as it unveils its new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the chipset that will be used in most high-end phones by 2023. Not only have the performance of the processor and the GPU improved, but both elements have become more energy efficient, an improvement of 40% and 45% respectively.
The processor clock speed has not changed, but Qualcomm uses a different arrangement of CPU cores. The chipset is made with a 4 nm baking process, just like its predecessor.
Working memory and internet speed
Also new is the support for faster working memory: LPDDR5X up to 4200 MHz instead of LPDDR5 up to 3200 MHz. In addition, a faster standard for internal storage is now supported, namely UFS 4.0.
Qualcomm will support faster Wi-Fi connections with its Snapdragon X70 via the Wi-Fi 7 standard. The theoretical speed is increased from 3.6 Gbps in the previous generation to 5.8 Gbps. Not much will change in terms of mobile data speed. The new modem does make it possible to have 5G work on two SIM cards at the same time on dual-SIM phones.
Camera and AI
There is also something new to report in terms of the camera. Qualcomm has optimized its chipset for Samsung’s 200-megapixel cameras. Manufacturers can also allow up to three 36-megapixel cameras to shoot simultaneously. Filming is still possible in 8K at a maximum of 30 fps, but phones can now simultaneously take photos in 8K with a maximum of 64 megapixels while filming. It is also new that Qualcomm can decode 8K videos using the AV1 codec.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 can also make faster calculations related to artificial intelligence (AI). The speed of the Hexagon processor has been increased 4.35 times for this. Normally, Qualcomm shares the technical details of its chipset later, but the specifications have already been leaked.
