problems with sd card and card reader

It seems that some owners of a new 2021 MacBook Pro are experiencing problems using the built-in card reader. The problems range from an unreadable card to slow speeds. Will Apple come up with a solution soon?

MacBook Pro 2021: Card Reader Issues

Several users are now complaining about the built-in card reader. The issues appear to be affecting both the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021. There is some variation in the problems that MacBook owners experience. Some users indicate that their SD card cannot be read. Others can use the SD card, but have a slow speed when reading or writing.

It also doesn’t seem to matter which SD card is used. The problem occurs with both SDHC (SD High Capacity) and Secure Digital Extended Capacity (SDXC) cards. The way the SD card is formatted doesn’t seem to have any influence either, because the problems still persist.

Workaround for card reader problems

It’s not entirely clear yet whether this is a software or hardware issue. Some users have found a temporary solution. By using a separate SD card reader via USB-C, an SD card can be read (and written) without any problems.

According to several reports, Apple is aware of the issue and a fix appears to be coming in a future software update. A number of users with these problems have now had their MacBook Pro 2021 replaced by Apple.

A new design, powerful Apple Silicon processor, new screen, the return of the HDMI port and more: the MacBook Pro 2021 has changed and improved on all fronts.

The Pro devices have one type of connection: USB-C. The new MacBook Pro 2021 does have two more ports, because HDMI and the SD card reader are making their comeback. This means you no longer have to carry an adapter with you all the time. The MacBook Pro also has three Thunderbolt 4 ports (usb-c).
