Pixel Watch: Google promises “at least” 3 years of Wear OS updates
With the Pixel Watch now official, Google is revealing a few more details, including that the band commits to offer “at least” 3 years of updates for Wear OS, namely the operating system of the connected watch. In other words, updates are guaranteed until October 2025.
Google specifies that “software updates include security updates for the Google Pixel Watch, and may include bundled updates and other software updates”.
With watches and “guaranteed software updates”, Google does not distinguish between guaranteed Android version updates and guaranteed security updates. Wear OS 3.5 is based on Android 11 and it is believed that the next major release of Wear OS will be based on Android 13. However, most updates for smartwatches are delivered as apps/services through the Play store.
By the way, when will Google offer updates? Every month ? Every two months ? Once per trimester ? The company remains a little vague and speaks of an availability of “regular updates”. Technically, the same speech is held at the level of Pixel smartphones and they are entitled to monthly updates.
3 years of updates, is that good? At Samsung, we promise “up to” 4 years of updates for the Galaxy Watch under Wear OS. At Apple, there is no specific deadline. But to give an idea, the Apple Watch Series 3, whose support is no longer relevant since watchOS 9, has had the right to five years of updates.
