Personalized ads and App Store: France Digitale applauds Apple’s change
Apple made a change to iOS 15 by asking users who open the App Store whether or not they want targeted ads. This change took place yesterday. Today, France Digitale applauds the choice of Apple.
“If this is confirmed, it is clear that the introduction of this specific consent by Apple is the result of the investigation of the main complaint pending before the Irish regulatory authority, as well as other complaints filed elsewhere, including that of France Digitale ”, said Benoist Grossmann, co-president of France Digitale, an association that represents French start-ups, toiGen.
As a reminder, France Digitale has filed a complaint against Apple in France before the CNIL. It goes back to March. The association believed that the ads did not comply with regulations on the protection of personal data, including the GDPR. Apple happened to turn on personalized ads by default.
“The violation of the GDPR was indeed so obvious that the game was lost in advance for Apple. For France Digitale, it is the specter of condemnation that hung over Apple that most likely led it to change its behavior on its own. We welcome it! “, adds Benoist Grossmann.
Is the case between Apple and France Digitiale closed? Not really. The CNIL forwarded the complaint to its Irish counterpart, knowing that Apple’s European headquarters are in Ireland. To see therefore what will happen when the file is actually processed.
