Parcel service providers are doing away with same-day delivery
No time right now?
The large parcel service providers in Germany have for the most part abolished so-called same-day delivery. Reason: The demand for same-day delivery is too low.
Just a few years ago, same-day delivery was considered a must-have for parcel service providers and large e-commerce providers. In the meantime, however, Hermes, DHL and Co. have largely given them up again. The demand from customers for the special service was not great enough, they say. Meanwhile, Amazon is continuing its same-day delivery for Prime subscribers.

Hermes: Customers want more information
The logistics company Hermes has, according to one Report from Spiegel Online same-day delivery will be deleted from the offer at the end of 2020. The customers, explains Hermes spokeswoman Birte Ayhan-Lange, are less interested in the delivery being with them on the same day. Rather, it is about that they are informed when exactly the delivery will arrive.
Accordingly, Hermes wants to improve its delivery window and notification about it. The competition is also working on optimizing the delivery window. Like Hermes, DHL discontinued its same-day service last year – and now sees room for improvement in the precise notification of shipments. DPD withdrew from delivery on the same day in 2019. All companies say: demand is too low. Which is apparently not least because only a few customers want to pay the corresponding surcharge.
Parcels mostly on the go for a day
According to the delivery services, parcels would normally be delivered quickly anyway. According to DHL, 83 percent of all packages sent in Germany arrive the next day. Hermes even states the proportion of packages and parcels delivered the next day at 90 percent.
Amazon, on the other hand, is sticking to same-day delivery. It is not known whether the offer will be in high demand. According to the Spiegel Online report, it is also possible that Amazon wants to secure market share with it. Some grocery stores also continue to offer same day delivery in certain areas of Germany.
