‘OnePlus Watch is certified, appears in two variants’

OnePlus follows in the footsteps of sister company OPPO with its Watch, which previously also came up with its own Wear OS smartwatch. Details about the watch are scarce; It has become known that two versions of the watch will appear. There is still plenty of speculation about the differences.

OnePlus Watch

Since the beginning of the development process of the OnePlus Watch, rumors have been floating about the watch. The Watch is expected to have a circular screen, although no confirmation for this has surfaced to date. In addition, it remained unknown for a long time when OnePlus would launch the watch; Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, confirmed that the smartwatch will be launched in the first quarter of 2021. Information about product certification confirms this time that the watch will be launched shortly.

A certification report of the alleged OnePlus Watch has been published through the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Twitter user reports Mukul Sharma, also known as Stufflistings. In the tweet, Sharma shows a search where the model numbers ‘W501GB’ and ‘W301GB’ are shown.

It is expected to be two different models; Unfortunately, the BIS does not provide any information about the certified product, so it cannot be confirmed what the differences between these models are. It’s possible that OnePlus will market two sizes of the Watch – OPPO previously opted for the same strategy with its OPPO Watch, which has been released in 41 and 46mm versions.

Missing details

OnePlus could also choose to offer different connectivity options, with the choice between Bluetooth / WiFi and LTE variants. However, it is still uncertain to what extent the models differ from each other; that uncertainty can generally be extended to the OnePlus Watch. Many details of the Watch are still unknown, including the chipset that is used with the smartwatch. In addition, it is unknown whether OnePlus will use Wear OS.

OnePlus has shared teasers of its Watch several times in the past

Lau previously announced that there was still room to improve Wear OS. OnePlus started a collaboration with Google in December to optimize the platform. At the same time, the CEO said he would not be working on a Wear OS smartwatch. With the collaboration between Google and OnePlus in full swing, it would be a strange move if the upcoming smartwatch does not use the operating system.

It’s possible that Pete Lau meant that the default Wear OS interface will not be retained. For the OPPO Watch, Wear OS was provided with its own interface that was very similar to Color OS. OnePlus could do the same, but by adding its own OxygenOS sauce to Wear OS. Presumably in March when it will launch the OnePlus 9 series, what OnePlus has set up for the Watch will be on display.
