One model subtracts all others

Anyone who drives an e-car knows the problem: the time at the charging station can be long. However, there are models that can do more than others. A popular electric car leaves the competition out in the cold.

A large part of the charging of electric cars takes place at home or at work. Slow loading speeds are usually not a problem there. But sometimes it has to be quick for example when charging on the motorway. Here, e-cars are the shorter ones compared to classic combustion engines at the pump. But there are also differences among electric cars.

Kia is ahead of the competition: EV6 has the best fast charging performance

The P3 Charging Index, which has been examining the charging performance of e-cars since 2019, takes a closer look. There is a new winner: The The EV6 from Kia achieves the best performance on the fast charger across all classes – not for nothing the car of the year 2022. The Korean Stromer even slightly exceeds the rating of 1.0 defined by P3 as the ideal value with a final result of 1.03.

What does that mean? The testers defined the ideal value as that of an electric car Power for a range of 300 km within 20 minutes can load. For them, this is the decisive limit for the everyday stress test. The Kia even managed 309 km in the same period – according to P3 an award for long-distance suitability.

  • upper class: Mercedes EQS 450+ with a value of 0.92 (275 km in 20 minutes)
  • middle class: Kia EV6 (to the GIGA test) with a value of 1.03 (309 km in 20 minutes, overall victory)
  • compact class: VW ID.3 (58 kWh battery) with a value of 0.51 (154 km in 20 minutes)

E-cars in practice: It’s not just about range

With the value specified by P3, one wants to achieve a practical comparability. In the test, charging was carried out on identical 350 kW fast chargers, the charging window under consideration is in Ideal range between 10 and 80 percent of the maximum battery capacity of the vehicles. The real consumption of the e-cars, which is included in the determined value, is also important for the result.

The management consultancy P3 Group has teamed up with colleagues from Electrive for the electric car comparison. The aim is to enable a realistic assessment of the charging performance of e-cars. Manufacturers usually state the maximum charging power, but this is only achieved in one charging process under ideal conditions and not permanently.
