Now 26.99 euros are due
From a one-time payment to a subscription: The well-known and comprehensive image editing app Pixelmator Photo is now only available on a subscription basis. It costs 5.49 euros per month or 26.99 euros per year. The developers write that nothing will change for existing users.
Pixelmator Photo iPhone app launches subscription model
A one-off fee of EUR 7.99 was previously sufficient for the iPhone and iPad app Pixelmator Photo. The developers are now explaining in their blog that the existing model cannot be continued. Ongoing costs would force them to choose another option. New customers must take out a subscription that deals with monthly 5.49 euros or yearly 26.99 euros makes noticeable. Alternatively, a lifetime subscription is offered for EUR 54.99.
For existing customers however, there is good news. You will not be asked to pay again and can continue to use the app to edit photos on your iPhone or iPad. According to the developers, there are no additional costs.
The makers of the app admit that prices have increased with the subscription, but argue that a one-time payment “some pretty big problems” would entail. Slower development and a focus on new users over existing users are cited.
“We hope that there are enough users who use the app regularly and find that the annual or monthly fee is worth it,” it says (source: Pixelmator blog). With the other app Pixelmator (without photo), however no subscription model planned.

Pixelmator Photo: Native Mac app in the works
Pixelmator Photo will also be available as a “fully native app” for Macs in the future. It is slated for release in late 2022 or early next year. Existing users of the iOS app are entitled to a discounted subscription. New subscription customers should receive the macOS version free of charge.
