Nintendo announces game for Switch that wasn’t supposed to be released

Nintendo has announced the release of a new game. “Everybody 1-2 Switch” should already be on the market at the end of June. The game is a sequel to 2017’s 1-2 Switch, but there are early signs that the game may not live up to expectations.

Loud fanbytes the development team had trouble designing a sequel to 1-2 Switch, a multiplayer party game for the Switch. The obvious solution was to simply add more mini-games, as is usual with other party titles. Nintendo decided on a game show-like concept with a presenter and multiple participants. The game should also support lobbies with up to 100 players via smartphones.

This idea actually sounds pretty promising, but the feedback during the test phase was devastating: Families with children, who were intended to be the game’s target group, found the mini-games boring and often didn’t even want to finish a full round before they lost interest.

No one at Nintendo expected such a poor judgment, and various trusted Nintendo officials are said to have expressed concerns that releasing the game in its current form could damage the company’s reputation.

Despite the negative test results, Nintendo decided to go ahead and even took over the tasks of other outside service providers, such as printing the cover design and retail packaging.

For a long time there was also uncertainty about the price of the game. Initially, Nintendo arguably considered a full retail release for $60, but ultimately settled on a $30 price point, possibly indicating that Nintendo lowered the price to address concerns about the game’s quality to balance.

It remains to be seen how the game, which is set to be released on June 30th, will end up being received by the community. And who knows, maybe the bad test results don’t even confirm and Nintendo did everything right with the release.
