Wiep Idzenga’s duel tells about Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert who have been fighting duels in the mud and clay since their teenage years. Van der Poel – blessed with the cycling genes of his famous father and grandfather – usually beats ‘Woutje’ initially, but as the years pass, Van Aert gets bigger and stronger and the balance shifts. In cyclo-cross, the two equally share six world titles. Dutchman Van der Poel is the first to take a major prize on the road when he spectacularly wins the Amstel Gold Race in 2019. In the autumn of 2020, their beloved Ronde van Vlaanderen comes to an incredible apotheosis. The difference is three band thicknesses. And the two completely different characters – they are certainly not friends either – are far from finished. In The Duel, Wiep Idzenga takes stock of the epic battle between these two legends, reminiscent of the days of Bartali and Coppi.
