Netflix will produce fewer films, but of better quality
If Netflix dominates the SVoD sector, we cannot say that it is really thanks to the overall quality of its films or its series, and it will be enough to take a look at the top 10 programs netflix the most watched to be convinced. Netflix will however change course for its cinema division. After releasing at least one movie a week for the past two years, the streaming giant is set to reduce its feature film volume.
Bloomberg affirms that Netflix has restructured its film division by merging the team that works on small projects ($30 million or less) with the one that produces mid-budget films (between $30 and $80 million). This restructuring would result in a “handful” of layoffs, but the company did not specify the number of employees affected. On the other hand, Lisa Nishimurawho oversees documentaries and low-budget films, as well as vice president of the film division Ian Bricke both leave the company after more than a decade of “good and loyal service”.
Despite the large number of films produced by Netflix, only a few of these films have won accolades, Apple TV+ even indulging in the luxury of being the first SVoD company to win the Best Picture Oscar with a catalog of nearly anemic content. To solve this equation, Scott Suber, the boss of Netflix Film, decided to reduce the number of films in production to ensure that they are of better quality. It is not known, however, whether the current restructuring will also affect the division of large-budget projects (beyond 80 million dollars).
