“Mommy, what you’re saying isn’t right. You’re not listening, are you?

“Mommy, answer me!” sounds my daughter’s stern voice. It’s Monday morning and then I always run the morning rush hour on my own. My preschooler has been chattering nonstop for ten minutes as I frantically try to keep my mind on a shopping list. En passant I fill lunchboxes and pack backpacks. With the butter on my fingers and turning the lid of a drinking cup, I think I heard a question in the distance.

Listen

Without having a clue and hoping that the answer fits the question, I mumble: “Um yes. Yes indeed.” So wrong. “Mommy, that’s not right what you say. You’re not listening, are you? I asked if you had already fixed my chain that broke James.”

She strides around the living room irritated. The corners of my mouth curl. How this little lady gives me the wind from the front. That attitude. Completely justified, by the way, because yes, my thoughts were elsewhere and yes, I gave a haphazard answer. “Sorry dear, I didn’t really listen to you properly. But I promise you, today I’ll make time and tie the clasp back on. Word of honour!”

Not under chairs or couches

I was put back in my place. Don’t fool this girl. She pokes through everything effortlessly and does not hide her observations. During dance shows where I act as an audience, I don’t have to risk averting my gaze for even two seconds. “You really have to keep looking all the time, mom. Don’t blink either.” The other day I actually got a comment about the way I laughed at her jokes. “Mom, I can hear you fake smiling. That’s stupid.” Well, I had no idea about that.

When I later tell my mother what her granddaughter has been saying lately, she says: “Oh, I’m not surprised, you were just like that. On your birthday in kindergarten, when the whole club started singing for you, you stood on a chair and instructed the whole company from above: “You must sing and clap loudly, beat the drums well and all look at me.” Well Sanne, get your chest wet”, she chuckles. We both burst into laughter.
