Find and mine amethyst geodes
Amethyst blocks occur in the upper world of Minecraft as randomly generated structures, the so-called amethyst geodes, which are surrounded by a shell made of calcite and basalt. So you always have to penetrate these two layers first to find amethyst deposits.
Amethyst geodes can be around 10-20 blocks in diameter. They dive between sea level and bedrock and share the space with bedrock, caves, ravines and mines.
Amethyst blocks, piles, buds and shards
Inside a geode you will find the purple amethyst blocks on which the amethyst piles can be found. The latter go through several stages of bud formation before they are fully grown and ready to be broken down.
Amethyst heaps only grow on the amethyst bud blocks. When these border on air or water, the bud stage begins. Normal amethyst blocks, which look slightly different in their pattern from the bud blocks, do not produce amethyst heaps.
To mine an amethyte pile, you need at least one iron pickaxe. After the dismantling you will get 4x amethyst shards from each pile. If your pickaxe is enchanted with “cautiousness”, the piles can also be dismantled yourself.
Note that you cannot mine amethyst bud blocks in survival mode. They are destroyed when they are mined with the pickaxe. Growing amethyst in your own settlement is therefore not possible. Normal amethyst blocks, on the other hand, can be dismantled and taken with you in the normal way.
