Meta Quest 3, finally breakthrough for VR?
The fact that Meta, the former Facebook, is not sitting still and is still fully committed to the Metaverse and virtual reality, is evident from the further development of virtual reality glasses. The Meta Quest 3 is quite a leap forward technically. Still, there are a few things to note.
With the breakthrough of the Metaverse, things are not really moving along, so the main application of VR glasses is in gaming. But that may now change. This is evident from a detailed leak of the latest details in a message from the American Tom’s Guide.
New to the latest incarnation of the Meta Quest, the Meta Quest 3, is that augmented reality (AR) plays a much bigger role. Augmented reality merges the real and virtual worlds. The big advantage of this type of glasses is that you can use them in games as well as in everyday life.
For example, to see descriptions of special monuments, or the route to follow when you are walking towards a certain destination in an unknown city. The advanced mixed reality functions, as supported by Meta’s Meta Reality technology, will certainly help here.
Better image, better wearing comfort
Another strong point of the Meta Quest 3 is that it has more powerful hardware. As a user you notice this, because images are displayed more smoothly. The glasses can also control a larger number of pixels and also refresh them faster. With 120 MHz, the refresh rate is so high that wearing the glasses no longer leads to a seasick feeling. It is not yet certain how high the resolution of the glasses will be, but according to observers it will be around 2000 × 2200 pixels per eye. These are 30% more pixels than with the predecessor. This also gives a better picture of course.
It is certainly also important that the Quest 3 makes it possible to accurately set the distance between the pupils of the eyes. This makes the wearer of the glasses that little bit more comfortable. This feature was in the first Quest, but has been omitted in the Quest 2. Users will probably also be happy with the lower weight of the Quest 3. That makes wearing these virtual reality glasses a lot more comfortable. These glasses will also probably be equipped with a charging port. At least, that is what appears from released images of design drawings and renders.
Modest price tag Meta Quest 3
The price tag will likely be relatively modest, priced at just over €400. Meta’s hope is that it will allow them to reach a large audience. That makes these VR glasses interesting for beginners in virtual reality. The specs as they are now known are not as good as Sony’s more expensive goggles, the PSVR2. These glasses cost around € 600. But it is quite possible that Meta is working on a surprise in the meantime, so that they can still grab a significant market share with cheap and yet good glasses.
At the moment VR is still a niche event. According to experts, this year, 2023, VR will really break through. Besides from Sony, they expect a lot from both Meta and Apple. And Meta could very well live up to those expectations with the Meta Quest 3.
