Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) strongly believes in teleworking … in VR
Teleworking has grown widely during the pandemic, but for Mark Zuckerberg, the future is already teleworking… in VR. The Facebook boss explained his vision in an interview on the social network ClubHouse: “It’s going to unlock a lot of economic opportunities because people will be able to live where they want and actually work where they want and kind of teleport from one place to another. I am very optimistic about the impacts that this could have on the climate, on the reduction of the journeys that people will have to make. “
Glue is one of the VR telecommuting apps available for the Oculus
Of course, Zuckerberg is necessarily judge and party in this debate: Facebook owns Oculus, whose headset Oculus Quest 2 smashes sales records (for a VR headset). However, all is not to throw in the words of the CEO. Teleworking applications already exist on the Oculus, and most allow for full meetings with many types of documents (graphics, videos, 3D prototypes, etc.). The other big advantage of VR over traditional teleworking is of course the immersion capability. The employee really feels “in the presence” of the avatars of his colleagues.
Ultimately, when VR offers ultra-realistic environments and avatars, it’s a safe bet that the VR user will no longer feel the sometimes depressing “lack” of all human contact. As for the “green” argument (less transport or office needs), the latter is not really questionable. This future of work predicted by Zuckerberg… will come true quickly for Facebook employees: by 2030, half of the firm’s employees will be able to work remotely via a VR headset…
