MacBook Air 2023 gets a major update: M3 and 15-inch screen

Apple is coming this year with the new MacBook Air 2023 and the laptop will receive a number of significant upgrades. What will change on the laptop?

New MacBook Air will be released this year

Apple will release a new MacBook Air this year if we are to believe the usually reliable Apple analyst Mark Gurman. The MacBook Air range will be expanded with two models: a 13-inch and a 15-inch MacBook 2023.

A 15-inch MacBook has been rumored for years, but Apple still hasn’t launched the larger laptop. That finally seems to be changing. In addition to the larger screen size, according to Gurman, not much will change in the design of the MacBooks. The MacBooks will get a new chip.

Small MacBook Air 2023 gets new M3 chip

According to Gurman, the smaller 13-inch MacBook Air will get the new M3 chip. This chip is the successor to the M2, which appeared in the previous generation MacBook Air. With the introduction of the M3 chip in the new MacBook Air 2023, Apple follows a familiar pattern. We also found the M1 and the M2 first in the MacBook Air. Subsequently, the Max and Pro versions of the chip appeared in the MacBook Pro.

According to Gurman, it is not yet certain whether the 15-inch MacBook will receive the new M3 chip. In any case, Apple would choose to give the 13-inch MacBook Air the new chip, because otherwise the laptop still looks too much like its predecessor. The larger screen of the 15-inch MacBook Air 2023 might be enough innovation for the laptop. This will still receive the ‘old’ M2 chip.

Apple reportedly started making 3nm chips at the end of December, while the current M2 chips are still 5nm chips. The M3 chip in the MacBook Air 2023 and the A17 chip in the iPhone 15 are the first chips to be made in this way. The M3 chip is again expected to be faster and more powerful than its predecessor.

New MacBooks appear in spring and summer

According to Gurman, the new MacBooks will appear soon: the 15-inch MacBook Air may be presented next month. The smaller MacBook Air 2023 will follow at WWDC in June. This fits in with the prediction that the large MacBook will not get an M3 chip, Apple will not announce the new chip until WWDC in June.
