Apple AirPort: Apple’s own router
In 2007, Apple launched the first version of the AirPort Extreme, a router from Apple itself. This was a wireless router, capable of both wireless Wi-Fi and file storage. In 2013, the router, which was sold for $ 199, received the last update from Apple.

Apple officially discontinued the entire AirPort product line in 2016. This included the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and the AirPort Time Capsule. These products then disappeared forever from Apple’s offer. Isn’t it about time to release a new router?
New concept of Apple AirPort 2023
Parker Ortolani already made a concept to get an idea of what the Apple AirPort 2023 could look like. In this concept, the smart router is much more than just a router: it also serves as a speaker and as a central point in your smart home. The AirPort also looks a bit like the HomePod due to the touchscreen on the top.
In the concept, Ortolani assumes that the new Apple AirPort has the A15 chip, which we already know from the iPhone 14 and the Apple TV 4K. This chip supports, among other things, the fast WiFi 6E, Siri and iCloud Private Relay. The latter is an extension of Apple’s Private Relay, which protects and hides all your internet traffic. This way you can always surf the internet anonymously.
AirPort is the center of your smart home
According to rumors, Apple has been planning for years to release a new device that should form the center of your smart home. The router could fulfill this role. By operating the smart router with Siri, it is possible to use the HomeKit via the Apple AirPort. The smart router also functions as a speaker, so it takes over all HomePod tasks.
In addition, the AirPort serves as a source in a so-called mesh network: With such a network, other devices (such as your HomePod mini) serve as small additional WiFi sources. This is useful if you have a house with several floors. Often the WiFi signal on another floor is less strong. The Apple AirPort 2023 then uses other devices to amplify the WiFi signal. This way you have good WiFi coverage everywhere!
Is the new smart router really coming?
The chance that Apple will release a new AirPort is certainly there. The company is increasingly focusing on HomeKit and developing devices for your smart home. For example, according to rumors, Apple is already working on an iPad Home: a tablet that is specially intended to operate your smart home. It is therefore no surprise that the new AirPort will be the device that will connect all smart devices.
Still, there are no further rumors of a new Apple AirPort in 2023, but it would be a very good addition to Apple’s HomeKit. So Apple, what are you waiting for?
