Last year, Apple launched the Apple Watch Ultra, the best and most expensive Apple Watch ever. With its extra strong titanium casing, the watch is mainly intended for avid athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. Plus, with scuba diving and mountaineering capabilities, it’s the most advanced Apple Watch we’ve seen yet.

The fact that the Apple Watch Ultra is Apple’s best watch is also reflected in the price: you pay no less than 999 euros for the Watch at Apple. So a hefty price tag, but is the Apple Watch Ultra still worth it? We have taken care of the watch again in our Apple Watch Ultra review.

The design of the Apple Watch Ultra is immediately noticeable, because it is the largest Apple Watch to date. The watch has a case size of no less than 49 mm. For comparison: with the Apple Watch Series 8 you can choose between 41 and 45 millimeters. Especially if you switch from, for example, the Apple Watch Series 3 to the Ultra, you will immediately notice the difference. The screen of the Ultra is much larger and brighter.

The latter is particularly noticeable during sunny days, because the Apple Watch Ultra is also easy to read in bright daylight. Especially with the always-on screen, you always see what time it is, even in full sun. With the large screen, it is quite a device that you wear on your wrist, especially if you have thinner wrists. Fortunately, you get used to that after a few weeks.

Apple Watch Ultra: new design and larger buttons

The buttons of the Apple Watch Ultra are slightly different than we are used to. The Digital Crown is larger, which is also necessary due to the larger housing. In addition, the watch has a new action button, the function of which you can determine yourself. This way you can quickly start a workout with the orange button. A handy addition, but in practice we rarely use the button.

A big advantage of the design of the Apple Watch Ultra is the titanium housing, which is much stronger than the material of the other Apple Watches. The new, completely flat screen is also protected by scratch-resistant sapphire glass. As a result, the Apple Watch does not break easily. And it showed, because there is not a scratch to be found on the screen or the housing of the watch, even after months of use.

Battery is much better

A big advantage of the Apple Watch Ultra is the battery life. According to Apple, you can use your watch for about 36 hours as standard. If you turn on the new data saving mode, the watch will last up to 60 hours. This makes it the Apple Watch with by far the longest battery life. We noticed that immediately, because you can easily use your watch for two days. A big difference with previous Apple Watches, which you soon have to put on the charger every night.

Is the Apple Watch Ultra finally empty? Then you recharged it again. It is possible to charge the Apple Watch Ultra faster, the watch will then be back to full strength within about an hour. So you can quickly put the Ultra on the charger in the morning. Are you short on time? Don’t worry, because even with half the battery you can easily get through the day.

The battery of the Apple Watch Ultra still works very well after a few months of use. The battery capacity is still optimal, so we do not notice any difference with the battery capacity of a while ago. It is therefore still sufficient to charge the Apple Watch Ultra once every two or three days.

New features: scuba diving and mountain climbing

The fact that the Apple Watch Ultra is a watch for fanatical athletes is reflected in the new functions. For example, it is possible to dive for the first time with the Watch. As soon as the watch detects that you are underwater, a special water app is started. This measures, among other things, the water temperature and depth. The Ultra also has a special function for climbing mountains.

These are very cool features, but we hardly ever use them. It is therefore more interesting to see how the standard features work. The watch works very smoothly, but you can expect that for this price. We can effortlessly switch between the apps, even if several applications are open at the same time. The Digital Crown also works slightly smoother.

The Apple Watch Ultra is also very fast in recognizing a workout. When you get on your bike or are walking, you will soon receive a notification to start the workout. The watch will then include the time of the entire workout, including the minutes prior to the watch’s workout notification. It is therefore often not even necessary to use the action button.

Conclusion Apple Watch Ultra review

The Apple Watch Ultra is without a doubt the best watch Apple has released to date. The housing of the Apple Watch Ultra is extremely strong, so the watch won’t easily get a scratch or dent. The larger screen is always easy to read and is scratch resistant, but it does ensure that the Ultra is a very large device for your wrist.

With functions such as scuba diving and mountain climbing, it is an incredibly advanced watch, but you will not use these features very quickly. The Apple Watch Ultra works very quickly and does not falter, but you can expect that for this price. Running multiple apps at the same time is therefore no problem.

If you are a sports fanatic, the Apple Watch Ultra is definitely the best choice for you. Not planning to use the new features like scuba diving and mountain climbing? Then the Apple Watch Series 8 is probably advanced enough. The Apple Watch Ultra is especially worth the price if you use all the new functions, but that doesn’t happen that quickly.
