Apple is scrapping the physical SIM card
The launch of the iPhone 15 series is getting closer. According to the latest rumors, Apple is now planning to permanently remove the physical SIM card from the iPhone 15. Instead, the new iPhone will only work with eSIM, a digital SIM card that you download on your iPhone. A digital SIM card works the same as a physical SIM card.

The iPhone 14 series was already released in the United States without support for a physical SIM card, instead the entire iPhone 14 series works with an eSIM. Apple plans to do this in more countries, including some European countries. Why does Apple want to permanently scrap the physical SIM card?
Digital SIM card is more secure according to Apple
The main reason for switching to a digital SIM card is safety, according to Apple. After all, you can’t just remove such a digital SIM card from your phone, so your SIM card cannot be removed quickly if your iPhone is stolen, for example. In addition, a physical SIM card sometimes arrives in the mail and can get lost, even if you take it out of your iPhone. Esim does not have these disadvantages.
Your iPhone is also more resistant to water and dust if the opening for the SIM card is removed. Removing the physical SIM card also frees up space in the iPhone 15. Apple desperately needs that space for the new vibration motors with which the new buttons of the iPhone 15 work. You don’t actually press these buttons, but vibrate when you touch them.
iPhone 15 supports multiple eSims
Reason enough for Apple to remove the physical SIM card from the iPhone. If you have an iPhone XR or newer, you can already add an eSIM to your phone. There is then room for one physical SIM card and one eSIM. From the iPhone 13 and newer, you can add two digital SIM cards.

With the iPhone 15, this number is likely to be expanded to as many as eight eSims, two of which can be active at the same time. For example, you can activate a SIM card for work and your personal SIM card at the same time. It is then no longer possible to insert your physical SIM card into the phone.
Your physical SIM card will become unusable with the iPhone 15
Do you still use a physical SIM card, but do you want to switch to the iPhone 15? Then it is good to check whether your provider supports esim. In the Netherlands, a large number of providers already work with eSIM, so there is a good chance that you can easily switch to a digital SIM card.
Do you want to know if your provider supports esim? Apple has a page with an overview of all mobile providers per country that offer mobile subscriptions for an eSIM. In the Netherlands, at least Vodafone, KPN and T-Mobile support the digital SIM card.
All iPhone 15 rumors together
It remains to be seen in which European countries Apple will release the iPhone 15 without support for the physical SIM card. According to the rumors, the iPhone 15 will come to France with only eSIM. It is not yet clear whether the Netherlands will also receive the iPhone 15 with eSIM.
