iPhone 13 Pro ProMotion: applications can take advantage of 120 Hz

The iPhone 13 Pro have a ProMotion screen, that is to say that the display frequency can go down to 10 Hz and go up to 120 Hz. The adjustment is done automatically according to the current use for to do good to autonomy (which is very good according to the tests). But now, third-party applications are currently experiencing limitations.

A problem with the ProMotion screen of the iPhone 13 Pro and applications

Developers noticed that their applications did not take full advantage of the ProMotion on the iPhone 13 Pro and therefore of the 120 Hz display. Some animations remain at 60 Hz, namely the frequency that was used until now on the iPhone . Conversely, Apple applications can go up to 120 Hz without any problem. Fortunately, developers will be able to take full advantage of the technology.

Apple clarified this point by explaining that developers must declare the use of their applications for display at a higher frequency. To do this, they need to add a line to a plist file. Apple requires this step to only deliver higher refresh rates to apps that actually need them, which will maximize battery life on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max.

The problem is, Apple doesn’t offer developer documentation. This explains why this line story to be added to the plist file was unknown information. But Apple assures us that the documentation is coming soon. We can in any case be surprised that the documentation arrives after the marketing of iPhone 13 Pro.

A display bug with ProMotion

Still on the subject of ProMotion on the iPhone 13 Pro, Apple announces that an update is coming to correct a bug in Core Animation. Applications that rely on this component fail to have animations that climb to 120 Hz on the iPhone 13 Pro. Apple does not yet specify when the fix will be released.

In any case, the list of bugs concerning the iPhone 13 (Pro) begins to grow. There is a bug with Apple Music, a bug with widgets, a bug to unlock with the Apple Watch and now here is ProMotion.
