iOS 17 with sideloading and big changes for watchOS 10 (but not macOS 14)
WWDC 2023 is going to be important with the presentation of Apple’s mixed reality headset (Reality Pro), as well as the announcement of iOS 17, macOS 14, watchOS 10 and tvOS 17. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reveals (a little) details about updates.
iOS 17 is the update that will be of most interest to people, given that it concerns iPhone and iPad owners. Gurman explains that iOS 17 “will make noise beyond WWDC itself”, especially with the support of sideloading. It was already expected and it is confirmed a little more today.
In the case of iOS, sideloading will allow users to install apps on iPhone and iPad without going through the App Store. It will still be possible to use the App Store, but it will no longer be mandatory. Those who wish will be able to download applications from alternative App Stores or the Internet. This support will concern the countries of the European Union because a new directive (active from 2024) imposes an opening on the subject of the distribution of mobile applications.
Gurman also mentions watchOS 10, which he announces as a big update for the Apple Watch. He speaks in particular of a new interface, but he does not give more details. Conversely, macOS 14 wouldn’t be a big update, just like tvOS 17.
WWDC 2023 will take place from June 5-9. The keynote with the main announcements will be held on June 5.
