ING tests ‘payment close by’ in Android app: very handy
ING is testing a new way of paying with the bank’s Mobile Banking app. By using ultra-wideband (uwb) it is possible to make a payment by holding two devices close to each other. The feature will be available for the first time on some Samsung devices.
ING: NEAR pay
Under the name ‘NEAR payment’, ING is testing a new payment method in the ING Banking app. The application uses ultra-wideband, abbreviated UWB, for this. It is a peer-to-peer payment option where you can make a payment by holding two phones close to each other. This means you don’t have to search for a username, email address or phone number to share a payment request. An example is also given that it can be used for a donation at a collection box or for quickly splitting the bill for a restaurant.
In the ING Banking app you can indicate that you want to pay a person who is in physical proximity. You will then see the recipient, along with the distance to that person. Then the amount can be entered and the payment can start. A handy addition, without having to get started with Tikkies and payment requests. First, there will be internal testing with NXP and ING. In the second half of the year, follow-up steps will be considered, as well as involving customers.
Samsung is also a participant in the test, in which the UWB technology is supported. At the moment there is support for three devices; the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. It is currently unknown when the service will be available to each customer.
