in 2024, the smartphone camera can replace the DSLR
Although the gap between the expensive SLR camera and the smartphone camera is narrowing, the smartphone cannot yet be replaced. According to Sony, the end is in sight for the DSLR.
Smartphone can replace DSLR
If we go by the information of a director of Sony, the smartphone can replace the SLR camera. This should be the case by the year 2024, Terushi Shimizu reports. New techniques should contribute to this; for example, the director talks about quantum saturation and improved AI processing. These improvements will be introduced in the next two years. This should also be possible all in one lens, and the question is whether camera modules with multiple lenses will remain necessary.
“We expect still images (from smartphones) to exceed the image quality of single-lens reflex cameras in the coming years”, says Shimizu. He is president and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions.
For example, one of the improvements for the smartphone camera is the sensor size. This will double in the next two years, which should provide a new image experience, by applying multi-frame processing. Together with improvements in software such as artificial intelligence, and improvements in hardware such as dynamic range, zoom and noise reduction in low light, this should improve image quality.
Of course, the quality of zoom and wide-angle photos will still be a big difference between smartphones and DSLRs.
It is good to know that Sony supplies the sensors for the camera for many smartphones. In this way, the company has good insight into the progress of the possibilities in the field of camera. The new Sony Xperia 1 IV is the first smartphone with a true optical 85-125mm zoom.
