Images leak from Sony Xperia 1 V: significantly fewer sensors

Photos have leaked of Sony’s new flagship: Xperia 1 V. The most striking thing we see is a different camera arrangement that clearly has fewer sensors than the previous model.

Sony Xperia 1 V

So far it has been pretty quiet around Sony’s new device, but something has really leaked now. Weibo user Zackbuks shows images that really seem to be the new Sony Xperia 1 V. It is only a close-up of the back of the device, but that does not matter: there is indeed something to see that is clearly different from the previous flagship.

The camera island seems to lack the ToF camera and the RGB infrared sensor that Xperia 1 IV did have. Would Sony’s new smartphone only have three sensors? We also see that the LED light has been placed in a different position, namely on the camera island instead of outside it.

Unveiling at MWC

The new device is expected to be unveiled at MWC later this month. The Mobile World Congress will take place from February 27 to March 2 in Barcelona. In recent years, the event has (almost) not taken place due to corona, but it would be in full swing again this year with telephone makers and announcements. So it could just be that among those announcements is also this new flagship from Sony.

The leaked images also show an NFC logo, which indicates that it is a Western variant. In Japan they use Felica. In any case, we will probably have to wait a long time for the device. Sony may well announce it during MWC: it does not use a Samsung-like way of announcing and launching the same day. Xperia IV was announced on May 11, 2022, but released on June 11 that year.
