If you have Disney +, you can soon save yourself the purchase
In the cinema, “Avatar: The Way of Water” was a mega hit. In a few weeks, the sequel to the most successful film of recent times will finally land on Disney+. It took a long time.
May 16, 2023 update: The time has finally come, almost half a year after the theatrical release, Disney+ users have the opportunity to “Avatar: The Way of Water” from June 7th to watch – at no extra charge, of course (watch on Disney+).
The second part of Avatar has been available as a digital download from Amazon, Apple and Co. since April 4th. However, not as part of a cheap flat rate, but solely as a digital purchase title. Anyone who has subscribed to Disney+ can now save on this purchase.
This spectacle should be seen in the cinema, so those responsible at Disney also think and let Avatar 2 run in the cinema for a while longer. Normally, the films from our own production end up on the Disney+ streaming service after two to three months on average. For example, the latest Marvel hit (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) can be seen from February 1st, 84 days after its theatrical release. But at “Avatar: The Way of Water” it might take a little longer.
Waiting for Avatar 2 on Disney+
In fact, the film is missing from the current announcement of Disney+’s February innovations. There is a high probability that this will not change. If you put the 84 days mentioned as a time window, then Avatar 2 could probably no earlier than mid-March join the streaming service, but we doubt that either.
The reasons: director and producer James Cameron is not a big fan of streaminghe much prefers to celebrate the cinema as an event (source: Variety). An “early start” at Disney + is certainly not in his interest. Who knows, maybe such a person was even excluded by prior arrangement. The last point is of course purely speculative.
The trailer makes you want to go to the cinema:
However, they are not speculation ongoing box office receipts. The science fiction epic has already grossed more than 2 billion US dollars worldwide. In the US alone, at least $2 million is added every day. Much more on the weekends, most recently for example over 20 million US dollars (source: Box office mojo). The international box office results are not taken into account here. Bottom line: For Disney, Avatar 2 is a bubbling source of cash. So why do without it and offer the film in streaming now?
Look into the crystal ball (no guarantee)
Our guess: Like the first part, “Avatar: The Way of Water” should still be in cinemas for weeks and months. This does not speak for a streaming start in the near future. A release date can therefore only be speculated. If we had to guess: Before later spring or even summer it will probably be nothing. But maybe that’s a good thing, because Avatar 2 is actually one of those films that belongs on the big screen. Home theater can’t do it justice.
