How does TCL 10 Plus take pictures? | PHOTO mania

Welcome to our old well-known series, in which we introduce individual smartphones and talk about the quality of their cameras. We are more satisfied with some of them, a little less with others. The recently tested TCL 10 Plus can be considered a pioneer of the middle class. His cameras will obviously not be the main advantage, but I would not rank them among the worst. On the contrary, the primary sensor is quite solid.

It is possible to see up to four cameras on the back of the device, but believe me or not, I would really use only one – the primary. You can read more details either in the TCL 10 Plus review itself or in the continuation of this article. So let’s describe the cameras of this not expensive phone and look at some of the sample photos.

Cameras: Forget about the widescreen

Undoubtedly, the most distinctive feature of the back of the TCL 10 Plus is the horizontal camera assembly. There are four of them here and it is almost impossible to overlook them. And they don’t even protrude above the surrounding surface almost at all. Good job, TCL! The main sensor has 48 MP, brightness f / 1.8 and pixels with a size of 0.8 micrometers. It’s nothing extra, so it’s great that the software stacks four pixels into one, resulting in better-looking photos at 12 MP.

The ultra-wide sensor has a resolution of 8 MP, an aperture of f / 2.2, 1.12 micrometer pixels and a 118-degree field of view. This quartet is closed by a pair of sensors, which are redundant from a practical point of view. Almost every new phone from a lower price category has them. This is a 2 MP macro camera with an f / 2.4 aperture and another 2 MP sensor with the same brightness. The latter is used to measure the depth of field.

None of the sensors is characterized by optical image stabilization. We also have two LED flashes and support for video recording with the main lens in 4k at 30 fps or in Full HD at 30 fps. Record slow motion video at 120 fps in 1080p.

The front “selfie” sensor has a resolution of 16 MP, brightness f / 2.2 and 1 micrometer pixels. But all I just mentioned are the specifications “on paper”. What are the results from practice? Well, very decent when it comes to that primary sensor. The rest is at most average. But what disappointed me the most was the wide-angle camera, which I can get even closer to.

The TCL 10 Plus impresses with its primary sensor

The primary camera takes very nice photos during the day, but it is obvious that there is no form of image stabilization. Certain parts of the image often appear softer than other parts of the image. The edges are sometimes even blurred. However, the general sharpness is surprisingly high. Photos in worse light are much, much worse. The hours when the sun sets, the TCL 10 Plus still handles quite well, but the complete darkness with the street lights on is a complete disaster for the smartphone.

The night mode is here, but somehow I don’t notice its effectiveness. Without it, the photos come to me in essentially the same way. If it worked on this TCL in future updates, it would be a versatile camera for almost any situation. Then there’s the wide-angle sensor I’d rather not even use. The results from it are out of focus, dark and overall I don’t like it at all. They are completely different from the primary in color.

You rarely use a macro sensor, and the lens for measuring depth of field is also only in number. So you can practically use only one of the distinctive four cameras. Too bad, too bad. At least the one is relatively better.
