How do you talk to your child about the war in Ukraine?
On Trouw.nl, orthopedagogue Daniëlle Goedhart-Bax gives tips on how to talk about it together.
heroes
“Stay factual,” Goedhart says. “Do not go into too much detail, but think, for example, how the NOS Jeugdjournaal would do it. That has a very good tone. Putin wants ‘more land’ and ‘more power’, he wants to ‘play the boss’. But don’t go for it. have about all economic interests, or what Putin may be planning. Children can’t put all that into perspective yet.” According to the remedial educationalist, it is also good to talk about the heroes of the war. “The Red Cross, or people who go by bus to deliver relief goods or pick up refugees. Those are the bright spots.” Or participate in a fundraiser or relief campaign together. “It’s good to do something.”
Brothers or sisters
Also an important tip: try to watch when your child watches the Youth News and don’t let your own worries, but your child’s questions about the war, be leading. “Connect with what they themselves want to know.” Does your younger child find it difficult to talk about the war, but does your older child want to know more about it? Then wait until your youngest has gone to bed. “Tell them that their brother or sister is still too small for it, and that you will talk about it after they go to bed. Then they will feel extra big.”
