Hey Amazon, this has got to get better
Amazon is a force and we, the customers, have made it that way. So we also have the right to denounce grievances and demand a rethink. There is now time and space for this in the current issue of the GIGA weekend column.
Like millions of other customers, I enjoy ordering from Amazon for well over 20 years now. But lately this shopping experience has been a bit spoiled for me. The online retailer has been delivering directly in our area for a few months now. Or commissions appropriate subcontractors. The Post, DHL and Co. then get nothing. I don’t have a problem with it.
Amazon delivery security risk: what’s going wrong?
However, delivery is sometimes a problem. If the package cannot be handed over directly, it does not always find its way to the friendly neighbor. Amazon also doesn’t seem to offer a pick-up option, at least this case has never happened before. Instead, it is “delivered” by throwing the package over the wall into the forecourt, simply leaving it next to the door on the street or, as happened recently, parking it on the small canopy of the front door.
According to Amazon, the shipment was then delivered and handed over to a resident. I beg your pardon? Since when do I or my loved ones live on the canopy over the front door? This is not a delivery but a direct invitation to thieves to reach out directly. After all, the door mentioned is right on the sidewalk, freely accessible to everyone.
I don’t want to generalize about the problem, it is more likely to depend on the respective work situation and the driver. Of course, there have also been deliveries that went differently and were exemplary. Nonetheless: We actually only have the specific problem since Amazon started supplying here directly. At least the delivery is a little faster now. But what use is this to me if it’s not me, but a potential thief who can receive the package sooner? All of this is not an isolated case and is a nationwide issue.
My thoughts for the weekend: The column aims to provide food for thought and reflect on the week’s “news flood” towards the end. A small selection of previous articles in the column:
Quite simply: no subcontractors, no more excuses
There’s no question that things have to get better now. But how? For example, when Amazon finally becomes aware of its own responsibility and ensures that the well-known and simply miserable working atmosphere of the drivers is improved. I just don’t want them to feel compelled to distribute my packages on the street because of the pressure. The boys and girls should have the time to act in peace and thus in the interests of the customers. So far, Amazon has repeatedly rejected such a responsibility, see for example the last report in the media (source: tagesschau.de). But it cannot be that one always excuses oneself with regard to the employment of subcontractors.
What you can get as a Prime member of Amazon:
Amazon has enough capital to forego subcontracting and just take matters into their own hands. Then you have full control and don’t have to hide behind external companies. Seriously Amazon, if your boss manages to fly himself and William Shatner into space, then properly supplying it shouldn’t be much of a challenge down here on earth. Ergo: do better.
