All important iPhone 14 rumors in a row
Thanks to several reliable Apple insiders, we know early every year about the changes with upcoming iPhone models. The year 2022 is no exception, because we already have a good idea of what Apple will present.
Just like in recent years, there will be four new iPhone models. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (who is very knowledgeable when it comes to future iPhones), the following devices are involved:
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max succeed the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Of the lineup, they are the cheapest new iPhone models. It is striking that Apple stops with the 5.4-inch iPhone mini. Instead, there will be a Max version, which is the same size as the Pro Max.
New design
The Pro models are especially interesting this year. For example, because of the design, because for the first time since 2017, the Apple flag chip does not have a notch at the top of the screen. Instead, there will be a striking design with two cutouts, reported display analyst Ross Young. Below you can see a concept of this.
On the left is a pill-shaped recess, in which Apple stores the selfie camera, among other things. Apple’s dot projector (which is needed for Face ID) is in the circular hole. Previously, Apple hoped to process the Face ID parts under the screen, but the technology is not ready for that yet. And because Apple would like to get rid of the characteristic notch, the company opts for this solution for the time being.
With the cheaper iPhone 14 (Max), Apple does not seem to be working on the design. So you can again expect a notch like the iPhone 13 (mini) also has.
48 megapixel camera
The iPhone has had 12-megapixel camera sensors for years, but starting with the iPhone 14 Pro, the main camera has an impressive 48-megapixel resolution. This means that in good lighting conditions you get photos with more detail.
The 48-megapixel sensor also has a disadvantage: because the pixels are a lot smaller, photos in the dark look worse. Apple wants to solve this by using ‘pixel binning’, in which software combines four pixels into one superpixel. So low-light performance will remain as good as it is today.
Apple doesn’t change much about the camera of the iPhone 14 (Max). They again have lenses with 12 megapixels on the back. The module does seem to change slightly. The lenses may be slightly larger, allowing them to capture more light and improve quality.
