Google stops selling Cardboard VR
It’s a bit of the worry of Google : there are the “historical” services which work, or which rather overlook the internet and mobile services market (Google Maps, Google Search, Gmail), and there is the rest, ie the various experiments of the giant in sectors that were not originally his. G +, the Loom internet balloon project, Ara modular smartphone, drones, Google Glass and more recently the Daydream VR platform, all these attempts at diversification have ended in more or less bitter failures. Even the recent Stadia finds himself in turmoil …
Regarding VR, Google is definitely abandoning the market this time after having already drawn the line on Daydream two years ago. The Cardboard VR, these cardboard VR “helmets” that you could assemble yourself, are no longer offered for sale on the Google Store. It may seem trivial, but the removal of the Cardboard means that Google no longer even believes in a hybrid between the smartphone and the VR (the smartphone screen also serves as a display for the Cardboard).
It must be said that the developers were not really in a hurry to create apps that take advantage of this accessory. Moreover, the enormous success of the Oculus Quest 2 is undoubtedly demonstrating that VR can only break through through dedicated hardware optimized for this type of experience.
