Google Photos tests filters that are very interesting in the Netherlands
Searching in the Google Photos gallery should soon be much faster thanks to new filters. They are currently already being tested with a group of users, and they are of particular interest to Dutch users.
Filters in Google Photos
Google Photos is an app that ensures that all photos are stored safely and for free in the cloud (at least for now). But what the app is also known for are the smart functions. Not only is there a very handy video editor and photo editor, but also the search function works efficiently. You can search with the name of a city to find all photos of that location, but Photos also recognizes people and you can also search for, for example, ‘dogs’ or ‘churches’.
Still, Google knows that the search can be even better, which is why it is now testing filters that appear below the search bar on a small group of users, according to Android Police. You can choose between different types of media, such as screenshot, selfies and videos. But it is also possible to indicate people. You can combine filters to immediately find what you are looking for. By tapping one of the filters you immediately get an overview of all possible criteria that you can use in a search.

Extra handy in the Netherlands
Although the filters are only tested with a select group of users, they could provide great added value, especially in the Netherlands. In the English version of Photos, the search based on words simply works better than in Dutch, and this was recently shown in a tip article on Androidworld in which we search based on a date in Photos. In the Dutch app, when searching with dates, there are only a fraction of the possibilities compared to the English version.
That’s because Dutch is a relatively small language group and linking our words and syntax to the machine learning from Photos is a complex matter for Google. It is therefore likely to be easier to work with separate filters in Dutch and to improve the search in this way.
That is the case in theory, but whether Google plans to make the filters available here within the foreseeable future is not yet certain. Would you like filter options in your gallery app? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
